Europe’s Five Best Off-Beat Cathedrals

By Andy Hayes

Nothing beats a European city break like a good cathedral.  Stained glass, vaulted ceilings, dusty floors and echoing walls – you don’t need to be religious to appreciate these gorgeous architectual monuments.  Here are some of my favourite European cathedrals:

Durham Cathedral – Durham, England

Durham Cathedral

I think Bill Bryson says it best: “I unhesitatingly gave Durham my vote for best cathedral on planet Earth.”  What more recommendation do you need?  It’s over 900 years old yet she’s looking as young and perky as ever.  As I mentioned last were, there is lots to see and do in Durham City so Durham Cathedral is at the top of my list!

Cathedral of Our Lady of Strasbourg

Home to the European Parliament, Strasbourg also has a stunning cathedral.  In particular, I love the Astrological clock (pictured), which is one of the more ornate and interesting of those found in Europe.

Cologne Dom

The Dom’s jet black spires streak into the Cologne sky, one of the largest churchs in the world and the world’s tallest building between 1880-84.

St Peter’s, Riga

I think Riga’s St Peters deserves the vote for Europe’s most charming cathedal.  It’s just adorable and adds the perfect touch to the already-lovely skyline of Riga.

St Mary’s Cathedral, Limerick

Limerick’s castle-like St Mary’s provides that there’s more than Guiness and whiskey in Ireland.  Explore the church grounds then check out the peace and calm inside.

I could go on all day.  What’s your favourite off-beat European cathedral (and why)?
