The number of those who read blogs at least once a month has grown 300% in the past four years, and what they read strongly influences their purchase decisions, playing a key role in ushering them to the point of actual purchase, according to a BuzzLogic-sponsored study, reports Retailer Daily. jupiter-buzzlogic-half-online-population-reads-blogs-october-2008.jpg “Harnessing the Power of Blogs,” a research study of more than 2,000 online consumers in the US, was conducted by JupiterResearch, a Forrester research company. Apparently since the laws changed and children conceived from donated sperm can look up Daddy once they turn 18, locals have gone off the idea. Backpackers figure they won’t be so easy to find in 18 years’ time. One third of sperm donors in Britain are now from abroad, including Australians, South Africans and Colombians. These sperm-donating travelers won’t get rich overnight but $750 for delivering 20, well, loads, is a much better deal than working late nights serving drunks at the pub. The fundamental cognitive shift necessary to apply Universal Design is to overcome the mental barrier that attributes "normalcy" to some and results in "exclusion by design" for others. Konrad Kaletsch is tackling that problem in his post Universal Design: You Are The Expert: You unknowingly became an expert by the very attributes that make you unique. What works for you doesn’t always work for someone else. Someone with great physical strength uses force; genius uses intelligence. What emerges is that the variety of human ability is infinite. It is variety that is normal, not some standard... Read more »

Which one of these line painting companies would you hire to paint a crosswalk across your pavement? A:  These lines lead clearly from the parking area to the door of the store: B: These lines lead from a lamp post, shrubs and a curb to some more posts: Before you put lines on your pavement, watch where people walk. Then you’ll know where to paint your lines to get people safely into your store: Painting a crosswalk is a lot like building a website Before your design your next site, use a keyword search tool and find out where people are letting their fingers do the walking! You’ll... Read more »

Here is a quick list of quotes from Kayak CEO Steve Hafner that I Twittered during his PhoCusWright Center Stage Interview with Philip Wolf."Kayak's traffic was three times Sidestep when they bought them""The jury is out for the media model on retail sites""Bartels at Travelzoo has $80mm of revenue in their P&L. I want it. Of course they are a competitor""brought out a great mobile product a few years ago. Was used by 1000 people""next year will be talking about consolidation in OTAs (online travel agents), new faces at the top of some, cost cutting and site improvements. Can't believe how... Read more »

Mike Vowels of Stewardship Remodeling has just published an article on sustainability's triple bottom line for the Eastside Business Journal - Sustainability and Remodeling your Home.. He observes that "Only in the past five years, however, has sustainability become a catchword capable of capturing the attention not only of environmental scientists and activists but also of (some) mainstream economists, other social scientists, and policymakers.' He goes on to succinctly make the case. Note his approach. It's quotable: Potentially, sustainability can have a three-prong effect on the... Read more »

I have been at the Renaissance Hollywood Hotel this week as part 1,000 people attending the PhoCusWright 2008 Conference at this hotel. I have tried to be a good guest - no unnecessary demands of staff, tipping everyone that looks my way. I asked very nicely to be able to check out at 3pm rather than the 1pm they offered. "I am sorry sir but that will be an extra $25 per hour" was the reply. "But, I have been staying here for six days as part of a very large conference, surely you can be nice to me and extend my check out for no charge" was my polite reply. "Can't help you sir, we have to... Read more »
