An interesting new site launched in the US this week. Whole Travel is primarily a travel portal for the eco-concious amongst us but has some very good Uptake-esque search functionality allowing users to browse for products based on emotive keywords. Some very good pieces of functionality and Ajax-driven tools, as well as decent look and feel, too. But as comments on TechCrunch ask whether a travel site like this will fall foul of the economic situation, where consumers become less concerned about the environment and focus on price. So we asked Whole Travel for a response: 1) Whole Travel contains... Read more »

Frankfurt Book Fair When I realised I’d be living just a couple of hours south of Frankfurt, it didn’t take me more than a day or two to realise that I would be able to attend the Frankfurt Book Fair. As a lifelong bookworm and aspiring writer, the Frankfurt Book Fair seemed like a fairytale event for me and now that I’ve been twice, I can assure you that if you’re at all like me, you’ll love it! This year the Frankfurt Book Fair takes place from 15-19 October but the important days for “book tourists” are the Saturday and Sunday (18 and 19 October) when... Read more »

Last week I was interviewed by Elaine Yong from Global TV about finding travel bargains on-line.  Although the interview lasted almost an hour, the final clip was about two and half minutes.  Of course, only a couple of my tips actually made it on air, so I thought I would pass on all the tips that I shared. 1. When searching for airline tickets I recommend using the following two websites: a. Kayak.com is a search engine that compares ticket prices from many different websites finding you the best price from around the web.  Kayak.com is not a travel agent so they have no vested interest in... Read more »

RedHerring is the tech boom magazine who's death keeps being reported and yet somehow managed to survive. Every now and then I check in on the online version to see what is happening. In keeping this week's (accidental) start-up theme at the BOOT, I came across the list of the Red Herring North America 100 from back in May 2008. This is their list of the top 100 start-ups in North America. Lots of good pedigree here as past winners include Google, Yahoo!, Skype and YouTube (with a little glitch around Netscape).Much like TechCrunch50 I could only find one travel company on the list - tripJane.... Read more »

It’s a cute little town on the Normandy coast, but there are really only two reasons for visiting Bayeux - its proximity to the D-Day beaches and the Bayeux Tapestry.   Bayeux 15-10-2005 17h11 by Panoramas The WWII sites are fodder for a much bigger and encompassing post, so i wanted to focus this one on that other war: the 1066 Battle of Hastings, picked out in vibrant threads on a millenium old cloth. The tapestry is on display in the Musee de la Tapisserie de Bayeux which is in an old seminary in the town centre. Entry for adults is 7.70€ and includes an audio guide. A full 70 metres... Read more »

With all of the looming “noise” out there in the media world about recession and decreased consumer spending, I must first stand up and say that perhaps the media spin creates more consumer angst than the issues at hand?  (ok maybe not more – but you get the point).  Consumers are still spending, and my guess and according to many others, it will be like it has always been – “the strong will survive”.  An economic downturn is not the time to cut spending on Marketing, it is a time to shave spending and allocate resources to the most cost effective and successful marketing channels.    What... Read more »

Read More →

Read More →
