Accommodation bathroom cleanliness is crucial
by markus941 How important is the cleanliness of the bathroom at your accommodation? For me it’s crucial? I just don’t feel comfortable in an establishment that doesn’t have clean bathrooms. What a contrast I’ve experienced in standards of cleanliness in bathrooms in accommodation over a couple of days. On Sunday night I stayed at the Metro Inn Falkirk in central Scotland and was unhappy with the cleanliness of the shared bathrooms. On Wednesday night I stayed at the Sunnybrae Bed & Breakfast in Galashiels in Hawick in the Scottish Borders and I can report that the... Read more »
Is annual car hire excess insurance a good buy?
I’m always trying to point out the potential pitfalls of car hire because it is complicated to come up with best all round car hire deal. You should never purchase car hire on price alone, you really just examine all aspects of the car rental agreement. If I hire a car abroad once a year I use a car hire company which offers a truly inclusive price where either you will pay no excess in the event of damage of theft such as economycarhire or the excess will be refunded by the car rental firm if you pay an additional charge such as AutoEurope. However even with this cover damage to the roof,... Read more »
Review of Metro Inn Falkirk
Good - Low price of £25 for a room which sleeps up to three adults. Ability to get low rate even with late booking. Convenient location, just off M9 with plenty free parking. Bad - Dirty shared bathroom facilities and no tea and coffee making facilities in room. Room very basic with very thin mattress and small double bed. A 6 digit pin code rather than key to access room. Rating out of 10 - 5 I started my search for accommodation in the Falkirk area on my favourite hotel price comparison site, HotelsCombined where the Metro Inn in Falkirk came up at £30 a night for room only on the Laterooms... Does Alltop sound the death knell for blog subscription or an end to being b(l)ogged down?
I recently blogged about Travel Alltop and how I think it’s great to have the most recent post headlines of the leading travel blogs on a single site. This set me thinking that there’s now no need to subscribe to blogs on your favourite topics if you can just skim down the topic page on Alltop. I may be shot down in flames for such heresy by many bloggers for whom one definition of the success of their blog is measured by the number of RSS subscribers proudly displayed on their blogs. I’m looking at it from the readers’ perspective. Why be b(l)ogged down with all the posts... Read more »
Kango to Uptake - How important is your travel buisness name?
I received an email this morning from Kango informing me that they are changing their name to Uptake. The new name is deemed to be more relevant to the business’ aim of gathering, organising and delivering the collective travel wisdom from the internet. It’s a big step to change your name and I’m sure that Kango must have thought carefully about this. Personally I don’t like the new name as Uptake could be the uptake of absolutely anything. I thought Kango had a lot more relevance to travel and encouraged you to travel in positive ” can go” way. This all made... Read more »

Netvibes new look and feel Ginger
As a matter of fact I was experimenting with Netvibes and its Ginger version already. Just before noting Travel.Alltop I had made a public page on Netvibes by the name of Happy Hotelier’s Travel Readings, which was inspired by the way Edu Williams had formed his public Turismo (En) page. Look for yourself if this is an alternative for your rss feed reader and give me your thoughts. Off to baking my own bread:-) This article was originally posted on Happy Hotelier. You can read and comment on the original article here. Read More →
Historic Scotland Free Weekend 12 - 13 April 2008
Elcho Castle, Perthshire It’s Historic Scotland’s annual free weekend 12 - 13 April 2008. There’s free entry to historic properties all over Scotland. As well as favourites such as Edinburgh Castle and Stirling Castle, why not venture a little off the beaten track to some less well known castles? Elcho Castle is a well preserved 16th century castle by the River Tay, a few miles south east of Perth. It belonged to the Wemyss family until they gifted it to the nation in 1929 I have to admit that I’d not heard of Elcho Castle before I visited in April 2007. I think it is... Read more »
